Last summer, twelve-year-old Isaiah Payton was shot outside Lakewood Stadium and, sadly, was paralyzed from the chest down. Fifteen-year-old Damean Spear was also shot in the incident, but his injuries were comparatively minor, and the teen was treated and released.
In October, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Police Chief Erika Shields stood with Payton’s mother and announced a $10,000 reward for the capture of the assailant. Days later, an arrest was made in the shootings.
Meanwhile, for Payton’s mother, Allison Wood, the hardships continued to mount in the aftermath of the tragedy. But through the Atlanta Police Department, Shaq – renowned for his generosity – learned of the family’s situation and stepped in to provide a new home – rent-free – for a year.
