The COVID-19 pandemic may have delayed its unveiling, but Atlanta’s new 12-foot statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is nearing completion. The statue will be placed – not surprisingly – on MLK Drive on the city’s west side.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms believes that art and artists play a unique and pivotal role in both beautifying Atlanta and inspiring its residents.
Basil Watson believes that as well. He’s the sculptor who was commissioned to create the King monument. He says his vision of Dr. King was informed not just by pictures of the civil rights icon, but more by his words. Especially, one quote.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
