Residents, rappers and local small businesses turned out recently to make sure students in the Edgewood community had bookbags and other supplies for the first day of school. The event was held with the help of the Atlanta Parks and Recreation Department at the Coan Recreation Center. It was sponsored by Kiddies and Books, along with Atlanta rap artist Young Scooter.
For the second year in a row, hundreds of young people turned out for the neighborhood celebration, which included free haircuts, face-painting, music and food. Organizers say giving the students the tools they need for success in the classroom is a priority and something every child deserves.
