This week, in honor of Women’s History Month, the Atlanta City Department of Corrections and the City of Atlanta Department of Human Resources presented the annual Salute to Women in Law Enforcement Luncheon.
The ceremony is a way to both thank women for their roles in public safety as well as recognize them for their outstanding leadership.
Human Resources Commissioner Marian Woods and Corrections Chief Patrick Labat led the celebration, which featured City of Decatur Fire Chief Toni Washington as the keynote speaker. Chief Washington is the only African-American female fire chief in the country. She told the audience that she hopes she can be a source of inspiration to other young women to join the fire service.
Chief Washington says that currently only one-percent of America’s firefighters are African-American women.
