Phase One of the Atlanta Jail reimagining project is nearing completion. The task force created by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to come up with ways to turn the corrections facility into a Center of Hope and Equity has held five public meetings to solicit ideas from residents.
A sixth and final meeting is scheduled for April.
A large part of the task force’s mission is to engage neighbors and stakeholders to help identify priorities in the community, then dovetail those into the new center.
In Phase Two, Mayor Bottoms will review the recommendations from the Reimagining the ACDC Task Force and decide how the project will move forward. Collating the data, winnowing the options and then trying to redesign the facility – or build a new one – within those parameters, has not been a simple or easy assignment for those involved.
But everyone agrees that the difficult work is necessary to make the informed decisions that will positively impact generations of Atlanta residents to come.
